Council of Fellows

February 19, 2008

From:  The NCASLA Fellows Committee

Dear North Carolina ASLA member:

We continue to celebrate the fact that four of the thirty-three Fellows elected to ASLA’s 2007 Class of Fellows are from North Carolina!  Following on the heels of this fine news, the NCASLA met the deadline of February 15 and submitted a nomination for 2008. Now it is time to plan for 2009 and beyond.

Scheduling continues to be a work in progress.  We are using the input we have received and the experience gained over the past two years to continue to make improvements in schedule.  Looking ahead:

For February 2009

  • Interested members are requested to notify the Fellows Committee of their intent to prepare an application for 2009 as soon as possible.
  • By April 1, 2008 the first draft of materials is due: application form, narrative, and photos.  The Fellows Committee will respond with comments.
  • May 1 - revised materials are due back to the Fellows Committee.
  • May 15 - Fellows Committee provides the candidate’s materials to the president of NCASLA for distribution to the Executive Committee.
  • At the June meeting the NCASLA Executive Committee reviews the candidate’s materials. If approved for nomination, the candidate proceeds to fine-tune the application, form, and the photographs and returns it by September to the Fellows Committee.  September and October are reserved for the final “tune up” with the goal of wrapping up by November 1.

For February 2010

  • October 1, 2008 - interested members who would like information, early assistance, and/or comment from the Fellows Committee submit a resume or an early draft to begin the dialogue.

It’s not too early to begin thinking about 2011!

Detailed information on the ASLA Council of Fellows can be found on the ASLA website at www.asla.org/members/FASLA.htm.  Nomination guidelines, eligibility, successful nominations, packet requirements, jury process, and notification process are included.  Continuous membership in ASLA for 10 years is a prerequisite.

The Fellows Committee’s job is to stay informed about the Fellows nomination process and to help others become informed. We will serve as an information resource, coach, and facilitator.  We do not author nominations or make recommendations to the NCASLA Executive Committee for approval or disapproval. Members of the committee include Chuck Flink, Juanita Shearer-Swink, and Mack Little.   We welcome the opportunity to assist you.    I am serving as chair.

The efforts of the NCASLA Fellows Committee are a work in progress and we welcome your inquiries and ideas.
