NCASLA’S FIRST ANNUAL CELEBRATION OF
LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE A GREAT SUCCESS

Pinehurst Event Draws Professionals from Across the State

PINEHURST, NC – The North Carolina Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (NCASLA) hosted its first annual Celebration of Landscape Architecture on Saturday, November 10th. Nearly 200 members and guests of NCASLA enjoyed a formal evening at the historic Pinehurst Resort celebrating the heritage of landscape architecture in the state of North Carolina. It was an evening of fellowship, education and congratulations as NCASLA honored its own.

Premiering at the celebration was the recently completed film documentary “Landscape Architecture: North Carolina Pioneers.” Directed and produced by UNC-W Film Department Chair Dr. Lou Buttino, the film uses interviews, archival footage and on-site shooting to document the careers and contributions of Lewis Clarke and Richard Bell of Raleigh and Kenneth Coulter of Durham, all fellows in the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA). Each renowned for over four decades of work in the southeast, these gifted designers helped shape the profession of landscape architecture in North Carolina.

Wilmington landscape architect Mindy Arthur narrated and co-produced the film, which is formatted for public television broadcast. The film is the first in a series of documentaries planned to highlight the careers of the state’s leading landscape architects and was made possible through a Chapter Initiative Program matching grant from ASLA. NCASLA plans to make the film available for purchase through its website.

NCASLA President Daniel Jewell of Durham, Past-President Luther Smith of Hendersonville, and Jeff Young, NCASLA’s Awards Chair, presented professional and special awards in the field of landscape architecture. An Award of Excellence (the highest award) was given to Kimley-Horn and Associates, Raleigh, NC, for the design of the NCSU Campus Pedestrian Tunnel. Receiving Honor Awards were Charlotte firms HadenStanziale, Site Solutions and ColeJenest & Stone for the First Ward Public Spaces, Covenant Presbyterian Columbarium and City Park respectively. Merit Awards were given to Elam, Todd & d’Ambrosi, LandDesign, Lappas+Havener, Little Diversified Consulting, Miller Landscape Architecture, O’Brien Atkins, Site Solutions and T. Carter Crawford. Little & Little Landscape Architecture and O’Brien Atkins received Awards of Recognition.

The first ever Legacy Awards went to the three gentlemen documented in the film – Bell, Clarke and Coulter – in recognition of their lifetime contribution to the development of the profession in the state. Asheville landscape architect John Broadbooks received the 2007 Presidents Council Award for his major contributions to the profession of Landscape Architecture in North Carolina. Raleigh’s McNeely Associates, PA received the Firm Award for their work and consistent service to the profession. Clara Curtis, Associate Director for Design of the North Carolina Arboretum, received the Citizen’s Award, which recognizes the work of an individual or group other than a landscape architect that has made a significant contribution to improving the physical environment in North Carolina. Asheville’s non-profit organization RiverLink also received a Citizen’s Award for spearheading the economic and environmental revitalization of the French Broad River

Perry Howard, FASLA, NC A&T Landscape Architecture Department Head and national ASLA President, and Gene Bressler, FASLA, NCSU Department of Landscape Architecture Head, presented the Student Awards of Excellence to Yolanda Salone of NC A&T and Emily McCoy, Brad Bieber and Leslie Titchner of NCSU.

Peter J. Hatch, Director of Gardens and Grounds for the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, concluded the evening’s events with a presentation entitled “Thomas Jefferson’s Essay in Landscape.” Hatch has been responsible for the maintenance, interpretation and restoration of the 2,400-acre landscape at Monticello since 1977. He is the author of The Gardens of Monticello and numerous articles on Jefferson.

NCASLA would like to extend a special thanks to those firms and individuals whose donations made this event possible. Sponsors include DPR; Broadbooks Associates, PA; Coulter Jewell Thames; Luther Smith & Associates; Timothy W. Maloney, ASLA; Turnbull Sigmon Design; HadenStanziale and Blue Max Materials. Belgard Hardscapes by Goria Enterprises was our bar and reception sponsor. Pine Hall Brick sponsored the premiere screening of the documentary.
