The North Carolina Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects

North Carolina Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects Develops 2010 Strategic Plan

The Executive Committee of the North Carolina Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects, together with members of the Strategic Planning Session developed the 2010 Strategic Plan.

The Strategic Plan outlines the Goal of NCASLA and the Top Objectives of the Chapter.  To view and/or print the 2010 Strategic Plan  please go to the following link:

A Brief History of the North Carolina Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects

The American Society of Landscape Architects was founded in 1889 in New York City. The original membership included eleven members.

The North Carolina chapter of the ASLA was formed in 1973. Prior to this time, North Carolina had been a part of the Southeastern Chapter which included Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee. It was felt that North Carolina needed an organization of its own and the NCASLA was formed.

The first president of the North Carolina Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects was Richard Bell. The NC Chapter includes members in private practice, public practice, academic and related professions. There are five official sections:  the Charlotte Area Section, the Coastal Section, the Mountain Section, the Triangle Section, and the Triad Section. The North Carolina Chapter ranks in the top 10 of ASLA chapters in number of chapter members.

NCASLA offers members a vast array of benefits:

  • Two Annual Educational Conferences
  • Networking opportunities
  • Social Events
  • Notification of Employment and/or hiring opportunities
  • Notification of Request for Proposals on possible Projects
  • Awards Program for professional design criteria
  • Recognition by peers for significant accomplishments in the field of Landscape Architecture
  • Notification of possible law changes to the State Licensure
  • Promotion of the profession to the community
  • Lobbying voice
  • Mentoring and leadership opportunities with LA students

Since 1994, the Chapter has contracted with professional management services to assist the leadership in the day-to-day activities and to implement the decisions of the NCASLA Executive Committee.
