NCASLA is proud to announce one of its members being appointed as Deputy Secretary for Transit for North Carolina Department of Transportation. Paul was the keynote speaker at the 2010 Spring Conference in Wilmington, NC and his topic “Active Living by Design- the Landuse and Transportation Connection” energized the audience with factual studies, research methodologies and strategic design applications of civic spaces and places. His unbridled passion for the profession shows in his works in the design of meaningful places through the landuse and transportation connection. Among his many professional commitments, he served as the national President for ASLA in 2002.

Below is the NCDOT announcement of his new appointment.

The N.C. Department of Transportation today announced the appointment of Paul Morris of Raleigh as the department’s new Deputy Secretary for Transit. He begins on Thursday, Sept. 1.

“NCDOT is fortunate to attract a person of Paul Morris' talent and experience,” said Transportation Secretary Gene Conti. “His work in the areas of multi-modal transportation, community planning and public-private partnerships will help us move forward building a 21st Century transportation system that facilitates job creation and improves quality of life for all North Carolinians.”

As Deputy Secretary for Transit, Morris will oversee the operations of the department’s five modal divisions: Aviation, Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation, Ferry, Public Transportation and Rail, as well as the 634 full-time and 257 temporary employees of these divisions.

Morris brings more than 30 years of experience to the department. He currently serves as president and principal consultant for Greenleaf Strategies LLC, and was previously executive vice president and global director of strategic consulting and sustainability with Parsons Brinckerhoff Inc.

Morris is a licensed landscape architect and a member of the American Planning Association. His professional experience includes work on more than 400 planning projects in the areas of land use and transportation planning, transit-oriented development, urban regeneration and development, sustainable community development, ports and marine development, natural resource management, parks and public places development and corporate and institutional facility development. In North Carolina, Morris worked on transit-oriented development planning along the LYNX Blue Line and strategic financing along the RED Line corridors in Charlotte and consulted on land use and transportation planning for Triangle Transit in Raleigh.

Morris is a 1984 graduate of the University of Oregon with a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture. He also holds a graduate certificate in innovations in zoning, planning and development from Harvard University, as well as a professional certificate in disaster response and public assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Emergency Management Institute.

Please join me in congratulating Paul on his new appointment.
