January 2014 President's Message

January 2014 President's Message

Ask not what NCASLA has done for you,  but what you can do for NCASLA?

Keith Downing, ASLA
President 2013-2014

As we enter into 2014, we set resolutions to accomplish goals and plan for change, we need to ask ourselves, “How is this change going to occur?”  It’s easy to reflect on the past, evaluate what has happened, why it has happened and to have an opinion on those events but even more difficult to predict.  This year I challenge you to “be the change” and become an integral part of both your profession, your professional society, and improve your own personal development.  These are all things that can make a difference for you in 2014 as an active member of NCASLA.

Over the past years that I have served on the Executive Committee, I have witnessed on average, 4-6 people doing the work for over 400 members.  I have seen our survey response percentages returned from as low as 8% to a high of 15%.  This is all inclusive from National ASLA surveys, NCASLA surveys, Section Chair surveys and Legislative Alert responses.  I ask again, will this be the year you get involved?

On the opposite end of the spectrum, NCASLA has boasted three National ASLA Presidents and is one of the strongest chapters in Fellow memberships, having a Fellow accepted almost on an annual basis.  Who will be the next National Leader?  Who will be the next Chapter Leader? Who will be the next Fellow?  Will it be you?  Will you be the change?

Reflecting on our Past President’s message, Ed Johnson reminds us to “Look both Ways”.  Now isn’t that a healthy dose of perspective!  What will this mean for you in 2014?  Is apathy your answer? I trust not!  Contact me when you choose your path.  We need your help if we are to continue.

Non Members/Advocacy/Lobbyist

Many of you may not know that $40.00 of the $100.00 NCASLA membership fee goes directly to support our Lobbyist who helps advocate Landscape Architecture and alert us to any political or legal concerns that may affect the professional practice and/or title act of Landscape Architecture.  There are over 700 licensed Landscape Architects in the State of North Carolina.  Among those 700, 431 of them are ASLA members.

If you are a Non-Member,  you can now join your colleagues and donate to our legislative efforts to help protect your profession.  For the price of less than one tank of gas you can help support the profession of Landscape Architecture in North Carolina.

Chapter Business

Looking back NCASLA has accomplished quite a bit with limited resources.  Looking ahead the Executive Committee has aggressive goals and has approved an aggressive budget. The 2014 goals and budget require participation, dedication and commitment from you and all of our members, not just the executive committee or the other 424 members that you think will handle it.

Here are a few items that have occurred since the election of the new Executive Committee:

  • Continued improvements to the website
  • Created a Twitter account
  • Continuous review of social media and other ways to improve communications, visibility and networking
  • Sent three Executive Committee members to the fall Chapter President’s Council meeting in Boston
  • Sent two Executive Committee members to the National ASLA Conference in Boston
  • Registered our lobbyist with the state to represent Landscape Architects across the state
  • Appointed Marsha Wyly to the North Carolina Landscape Contractors’ Registration Board
  • Continue to plan, promote and coordinate the 2014 Tri-State Conference
  • Continue to solicit speakers, vendors and awards submittals for the 2014 Tri-State Conference
