Below, Beside & Beyond Every Solar Panel: Keep Stormwater from Eroding the Bottom Line

When: Friday, October 30, 2026, at 12:00 PM - Friday, October 30, 2026, at 1:30 PM Eastern Time

Stormwater runoff from utility-scale solar farms is destructive. It erode the soil and the profitability with stormwater-related costs, regulatory fines and lost productivity. Originally developed for urban impervious surfaces, Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) is commonly used for solar farms although the surfaces are permeable. We will discuss a novel approach of downsizing the GSI to the panel scale and utilize the permeable lands below and beside solar panels. Runoff/erosion can be significantly reduced by retaining stormwater at the dripline. It also reduces the nonproductive acreages. The retained stormwater can help groundwater recharge and/or be used for vegetation/crop (agrivoltaics) establishment.
