Remembering Mac Newsom

Remembering Mac Newsom

This remembrance was published by The News & Observer on Feb. 20, 2022.

A proud son of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Mac Newsom brought the love and joy of close family and community with him everywhere. Mac loved his mother's cooking, learning the details of his father's business, the ferocious spirit of teamwork on the football and baseball fields, all celebrations, and practical jokes. It is for this mix of big-hearted leadership and trustworthiness that he was elected Social Chairman of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity at NC State and later was awarded a Bronze Star for Meritorious Service as a Second Lieutenant after a year of service in Vietnam.

January was a month full of winter weather, but it did not slow down the planning efforts of the Executive Committee. We met in 3 different small sessions over the course of the month to review the previous year and plan for the following year. It was also a great opportunity for our new Executive Committee members to get acquainted with everyone.

During one of the first planning sessions, we identified 5 goals for the year we wanted to work on. We then worked through each of them in groups and broke them down into manageable plans we felt were measurable and achievable.
