The current positions are open for this election period and will be on the ballot later this summer: 

President Elect
1-year term
This position leads the conference planning committee and is automatically followed by a one-year term as President and a one-year term as Past President. The President Elect, President, and Past President also attend the national conference and national leadership training workshops known as Chapter Presidents Council. The President-Elect shall be a Full Member.

Secretary
2-year term
This position is in charge of maintaining a record of the proceedings of the business meetings of the Chapter and the Executive Committee; preparing and issuing notices of the meetings of the Chapter and the Executive Committee; preparing, issuing, and receiving ballots; administering annual and special elections and notifying candidates of election results.  This person shall serve ex officio as a member of the Constitution and Bylaws Committee; maintain the Constitution and Bylaws of the Chapter; certify documents; and perform such other duties as are customary for the office of chapter secretary or as may be assigned or delegated by the president. The Secretary shall be a Full or Associate Member.

Member At Large – Legislative Affairs
2-year term
This position serves as a liaison between the Chapter and governmental bodies, keeping the Chapter informed about legislative matters of interest, professional affairs and reporting to the Chapter on environmental issues.

Coastal Section Chair
2-year term
This position coordinates educational and social events in the Coastal region of the NC Chapter, and he/she makes sure NC and national correspondence is reaching the members in that region. The Section Chairs shall be a Full or Associate Member.

Mountain Section Chair
2-year term
This position coordinates educational and social events in the Mountain region of the NC Chapter, and he/she makes sure NC and national correspondence is reaching the members in that region. The Section Chairs shall be a Full or Associate Member.

Important Update re: SB-367

NCASLA has been tracking SB-367 (https://webservices.ncleg.net/ViewBillDocument/2019/3071/0/S367-PCS45275-RN-8) since it was introduced. The NCASLA Executive Committee sent letters of opposition to the subcommittee and outlined concerns.

NCASLA is opposed to the bill because it could go against one of ASLA’s code of environmental ethics. Those ethics can be found on the ASLA website ( https://www.asla.org/contentdetail.aspx?id=4308).

NCASLA believes that trees are important to the health and welfare of our environment and that we must be good stewards of that environment.

Great news was received today, April 23, 2019, as: Sen. McInnis announced publicly that he will no longer pursue or push his tree removal ordinance bill!  See below for the full statement.

This is a great example of the power of advocacy, from LAs and from all of the other groups that opposed. 

We will continue to keep an eye on this and other bills. Please be on the lookout for any legislative alerts that will ask you to write to your representative expressing your concern over this bill.

Tree-Cutting Bill

Sen. Tom McInnis, R-Richmond, has withdrawn controversial legislation that would have prohibited towns and counties from regulating tree removal on private property without the General Assembly's permission. "This bill has been robustly debated and discussed," McInnis said in a statement late Thursday afternoon. "The intention of the legislation was to highlight the need to balance private property rights with the needs of the community." The proposed legislation generated strong opposition from municipal and county government officials. The N.C. League of Municipalities and N.C. Association of County Commissioners argued that it would restrict the ability to protect neighboring property owners from development that could harm property values and take away more local control over development.
 
 The N.C. Urban Forest Council also opposed the measure, contending that local tree ordinances can help address flooding issues, preserve historic districts and allow for utility line maintenance. On the other side, the N.C. Homebuilders Association and NC Realtors backed the legislation, arguing that local tree ordinances can hinder development. McInnis said in a brief interview Friday morning that support and opposition was nearly evenly split. "It was as close to 50-50 as I have ever seen," he said. Tell the EPA Your Views About WOTUS

Recently, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Army Corps of Engineers issued Docket No. EPA–HQ–OW–2018–0149, the Revised Definition of “Waters of the United States" (WOTUS), which would eliminate federal protections for ephemeral streams that flow after rain or snowmelt, as well as wetlands without surface water connections to larger waterways, and other bodies of water.  This would mean that at least 18 percent of streams and 51 percent of wetlands nationwide would not be protected under this new WOTUS definition.
 
After hearing from its members, ASLA has submitted comments to oppose the revised definition of WOTUS because it ignores basic science, undermines the tenets of the Clean Water Act (CWA), and ineffectively addresses the need for a clear, consistent, and universal definition of federally regulated waterways.
 
ASLA encourages all its members to weigh-in with their individual comments on this important rule, as it could have long lasting and far reaching impacts on the health, safety, and welfare of many communities nationwide. Feel free to use language from the ASLA letter or construct your comments based on your personal views before the April 15 deadline.
