Join a one hour walk through Sarah P. Duke Gardens on Thursday, September 30th, 2021 from 5:30pm - 6:30pm. You'll learn about different stone materials and applications will be identified and discussed. Master Stone Mason and Artisan Brooks Burleson will also be participating in the event to present his work throughout the gardens.

NCASLA Legislation Action Alert: August 2021

This week the language from the tree ordinance bill – House Bill 496 - has been added to the House budget and is moving forward toward becoming law. The House and Senate still need to agree on a final budget and the Governor would then need to sign it, but we are alarmed by this language becoming part of the budget discussion. Note, the Senate did not include this language in its budget.

Happy July! I hope you are all enjoying your summer and finding time to get out and enjoy life despite how busy we are as landscape architects. Your Executive Committee remains busy, however, having recently provided an LARE Review workshop, a sketch crawl and a hike at the North Carolina Arboretum. Currently, we are planning our NCASLA Awards and believe it or not, our next conference.

ASLA Honors Chuck Smith, PLA and Barrett Kays, PhD, PLA, FASLA

NCASLA is proud to announce and celebrate the accomplishments of two North Carolina Landscape Architects, who through their volunteer efforts and work have demonstrated a genuine commitment to the promotion and protection of the profession and advanced the profession nationally and here at home. Chuck Smith and Dr. Barrett Kays will be honored at the National Conference on Landscape Architecture in Nashville this fall. Chuck will be inducted into the ASLA Council of Fellows for service to the profession and Barrett will receive the LaGasse Medal for his work in natural resource conservancy and public spaces.

Mountain Section PARK(ing) Day Volunteers Needed

The Town of Waynesville will participate in PARK(ing) Day September 17, 2021. AIA and NCASLA are seeking volunteers to steward parking spaces in three districts:
Downtown
Frog Level
Hazelwood
Teams will be responsible for design, installation and removal of their parklets. Preliminary designs must be submitted to the Town no later than Friday, August 6. Designs will be installed on September 17 and removed the following Tuesday, September 21 (pending).
