January was a month full of winter weather, but it did not slow down the planning efforts of the Executive Committee. We met in 3 different small sessions over the course of the month to review the previous year and plan for the following year. It was also a great opportunity for our new Executive Committee members to get acquainted with everyone.

During one of the first planning sessions, we identified 5 goals for the year we wanted to work on. We then worked through each of them in groups and broke them down into manageable plans we felt were measurable and achievable.

Make plans to join us for our 2022 Conference in Wilmington, NC on May 19 - 21 and earn up to 10 CEUs. At this years conference we'll examine the idea of confluence, including topics related to differing factors that join to create innovative and diverse solutions. You’ll also learn about projects and processes that promote collaboration, environmental justice, and social and economic resiliency for our local communities. Planning for the 2022 NCASLA Conference on Landscape Architecture continues and we are rapidly approaching time for early registration. As a reminder, our conference is being held in Wilmington at the Hotel Ballast May 19-21. SAVE THE DATE!!

The winners of the 2021 NCASLA Annual Awards were released on January 28 (see the list here). Look for highlights of the award winners via email and NCASLA social media over the next few months as we approach the conference in May. The 2021 award winners will be celebrated at an event alongside the 2022 winners at the conference in Wilmington.

This year's roundtable has four panelists who took the exam or are in the process of taking the exam. We will hear the experiences at different stages of their careers, the importance of licensure in their career path, and great study tips. In the South Carolina Lowcountry, there lies a community with a remarkable history that’s fading away.

This community known as Scanlonville, near Charleston, started out as a settlement for freedmen who crowdfunded their purchase right after the Civil War of a former marsh-front plantation of more than 600 acres. During the 20th century, Scanlonville became a hub of Black life, with dozens of homes, shops, the area’s largest Black beach and a beachfront pavilion that hosted musical acts as famous as Duke Ellington.

To preserve the memory of this settlement as gentrification threatens to erase what remains, a local civic group decided set out to build a heritage-based public space. The international contest held to find a designer was won by W. Chris Harrison, a College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences faculty member and coordinator of the college’s Landscape Architecture Program.

Marsha was a loving wife and caring mother, who enjoyed singing in church choirs. Marsha was also a very talented Landscape Architect. After receiving her Master of Landscape Architecture degree from NC State University she did extensive work in N.C. for three decades. She was asked to do work in other states as well; such as, the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington, DC. She was appointed by several N.C. governors to various N.C. state boards, on which she served for many years. She was awarded the Special Recognition award from the NC Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects in 2015.

The last two years have been, well, unique to phrase it in the best possible light. A part of the disruption that the pandemic world has brought to our lives includes the struggle to determine the right way to honor our fellow professionals who have done exceptional work over the past few years as we do every year, with the NCASLA Annual Awards.

Typically, the chapter holds a gala associated with the conference to honor winners. With last year’s shift to a virtual conference, we decided to hold out until summer for better opportunities for an in-person event. As it turns out, that has not been possible in the time since and our wonderful slate of 2021 NCASLA Annual Award winners have waited patiently for the time when they will be announced.

It’s 2022, and I hope you all had a restful holiday and a happy New Year. I am looking forward to maintaining these monthly newsletters to touch base with you and keep you updated on what your Executive Committee has been up to.

The Executive Committee has been busy getting ready for the annual planning retreat. We will be meeting a couple of different times over the next 2 weeks to welcome new Executive Committee members, and strategically plan for the 2022 year. Some of the things we will be doing to set ourselves for this next year is approving the budget, reviewing goals for the Chapter, reviewing goals for each of the committees, getting updates on the NCASLA Conference on Landscape Architecture in Wilmington.
